The exhibition presents the photographic commissions carried out by Lewis Baltz, Gabriele Basilico, John Davies and Jean-Louis Garnell in Fos-sur-Mer between 1986 and 1994. Alongside the works acquired by the Artothèque de Miramas is a non-exhaustive inventory of contemporary photographic practices investigating the landscapes of the Bouches du Rhône. These include photographs by Sylvain Maestraggi, Philippe Conti, Pascal Grimault, David Giancatarina, Giacomo Furnatello, Geoffroy Mathieu and Bertrand Stofleth, the Atlas Metropolitain by ENSA Marseille and SITe in the form of table prints.

The exhibition was prompted by an invitation from the director of the Artothèque, Béatrice Béha, to take a look at the collection of photographic commissions from Fos-sur-Mer. The idea was to showcase these photographs with a view to making them part of our heritage. This photographic collection was initiated in the 90s by the Marcel Pagnol cultural centre and then supported by the Fos Action Cultur association as part of the 30th anniversary of the port and industrial zone of Fos. The project was supported by the DRAC-PACA, the DAP of the PACA Region, the CG13, the SAN Ouest Provence and the new town of Fos. The collection was built up through the purchase in 1994 of Lewis Baltz’s work Fos - Secteur 80, and between 1994 and 1996 through the commissioning of photographic works on the town of Fos by John Davies, Jean Louis Garnell and Gabriele Basilico.
On the occasion of the publication of the catalogue «Fos nature d’un lieu» (Fos, nature of a place), which brought together for the first time an overview of the photographic collection, Bernard Lamarche Vadel wrote «... the collective work carried out at Fos sur mer is, and will probably remain for a long time, exemplary». Today, this collection is representative of the problems associated with photographic commissions and missions, the aim of which is to create representations of the landscape, and it demonstrates the difficulty of keeping the collections that have been built up alive. This is the case for the DATAR’s photographic mission, about which we can legitimately wonder about its visibility and the policy being pursued for this collection today. It is also the case for the photographic commission on the monuments of Provence, which ended up being dispersed and sold at auction in 2013.
However, in the case of the Fos collection, it is the premise of initiating a collection through the acquisition of an existing work that is exemplary. Fos - secteur 80 is the result of a proposal made by Lewis Baltz to the DATAR photographic mission in 1984. Acquiring existing works enables photographic investigations that are often more efficient than those carried out as part of commissions. The exhibition also includes an extract from Fabrice Ney’s 1978-1979 work on the new town of Fos in the form of murals. The draft of a photographic inventory of surveys of the landscapes of the Bouches du Rhône is also presented in the form of documents on a table. These include works by Sylvain Maestraggi, Philippe Conti, Pascal Grimaud, David Giancatarina, Giacomo Furlanetto, Geoffroy Mathieu and Bertrand Stofleth, the Metropolitan Atlas of ENSA-Marseille, and a history of the work of SITe. The decision to showcase the historical and heritage value of Fos-sur-Mer’s photographic holdings, and to relate them to contemporary investigations, seemed particularly appropriate at a time when the metropolitan area is being invented.
